About the Edition

This book is the first monograph dealing with dusty and self- gravitational plasmas. It is focused on collective effects in the dusty plasma, with allowance for gravitational interaction between dust grains which was not given much attention in the literature until now. Other features include charging of dust particles under various physical conditions and the motion of dust particles under the joint action of electromagnetic and gravitation fields (gravitoelectrodynamics). Waves in isotropic and magnetized dusty plasmas are considered in both linear and nonlinear theory. Wave scattering and various plasma instabilities are discussed. The theoretical developments are tied to astrophysical observations, in particular the role played by dusty plasma in the structure formation of planetary rings is analyzed. Several theories are reviewed and a new hypothesis for the origin of `spokes" in Saturn"s rings is presented. Audience: The book is addressed to graduate and research physicists working in plasma physics and astrophysics.

Apparently, this is the first monograph on dusty and self-gravitational plasmas. While the circle of pertinent problems is rather clearly defined, not all of them are equally represented here. The authors have concentrated on cooperative phenomena (Le. waves and instabilities) in the dusty plasma and the effects of self-gravitation. Part of the Astrophysics and Space Science Library book series (ASSL, volume ) Abstract The principal force responsible for the structure and the very existence of planetary rings is gravitation which includes the gravity field of the planet as the major component, perturbations on the part of satellites, and selfgravitation in the by: Stationary magnetic, electric or gravitation fields are nearly always present in space, affecting the motion of different kinds of particles in different ways. Quite often, the result may be a Unstable Disturbances in Flows of Dusty and Self-Gravitational Plasmas | SpringerLinkAuthor: Pavel Bliokh, Victor Sinitsin, Victoria Yaroshenko.
